Why get married?
Andy has explained it thusly: "I believe the institution of marriage as it exists in our society today is an outdated practice. While I have no problem with people celebrating their relationships in a manner of their own choosing, requiring a specific relationship to get basic rights like health care and hospital visitation is silly. Neither gods nor the government should be required to respect or validate anyone's relationships. However, the world I live in often doesn't behave the way I think it should, and refusing to play along comes with significant cost. I've already fought that fight once. It wasn't any fun. Married couples receive protections and rights denied to singles, granting automatic access to over 1,000 federal laws. Primary advantages include tax savings through joint filing, estate inheritance, spousal benefits, and medical decision-making rights. While some of these can be replicated through extensive legal documents, marriage makes them automatic. To gain the rights that should be afforded any family arrangement, Kayti and I filed the necessary paperwork in Breckenridge, Colorado. Kayti has been my family for decades - now the government agrees. We expect to have a party celebrating our Needless Formalization™ in about a year. Cheers!"
When and how will you celebrate?
Next spring and summer of 2027, we will have an Anniversary Reception Tour. The locations and exact dates are still being decided. The theme will be Unnecessarily Formal, to go with the Unnecessary Formality of having to get the government to rubber-stamp its approval on our relationship. We have friends and family pretty much everywhere, so to save everyone else the expense of coming to any single location, we're going to bring the celebration everywhere we can manage it. We're thinking of doing it somewhere in Colorado; somewhere in Buffalo, NY; at a park in Preble, NY; and very possibly other places as well. Hit us up if you want us to include your city as a stop on our Unnecessarily Formal tour! Just click on the RSVP tab. You will be taken to a short set of questions that will let us know what cities we should visit when, any dietary restrictions, and any fun ideas we should consider when planning our parties. You can RSVP "yes" or "no" and either will let you take part in the poll so that we can try to make it easier for you and yours to attend!
Why celebrate love while hating marriage?
The better question is, why not? Love and celebration are among the greatest of endeavors, in our opinions. It's the bit where the government sticks its unwanted nose into our business that we object to. We love each other and all of you very much! And we also love parties. Having satisfied the government and its obligations well enough to receive necessities like the ability to visit each other in hospitals, we want to celebrate each other and everyone else we consider family! And our definition of "family" is a much more generous inclusion than the narrow one allowed by the technicality of the law. Come celebrate with us! It's only the government who is unwanted and uninvited.
